Favorite Things (One's Hot, One's Cool!)

Hey all you tea drinkers out there! My Blogger friend Melissa turned me on to this company. It is called Adagio Teas and it is a very nice company! I bought the starter kit with the little teapot infuser, and a selection of green teas and i absolutely LOVE it!
You simply add about 1/2 teaspoon of their super fresh, delicious loose tea to the little pot along with some fresh boiling water and let it steep for about 2-3 minutes(or longer for a stronger tea) and then when your tea is steeped enough, set the pot on top of your tea cup and all the fresh delicious tea drains into your cup and the leaves and sediment from the loose tea stays trapped inside the pot! I'm ordering a few of these for my tea drinking friends as gifts. And while i am at it, i'll order some more of their lovely teas for me too! I want to try their Chai....

And this is my new Rival Ice Cream Machine! It makes a quart of fresh, home made ice cream whenever you want it! You simply store the canister in the back of your freezer to keep it frozen and ready for use, then mix up a super easy ice cream recipe(a few recipes are included in the enclosed booklet) snap on the top, turn on the motor and watch the ice cream mixture thicken...

Here we are making my favorite...coffee ice cream.....
The motor works a paddle and whips the ice cream into a heavenly sweet concoction

AND you get to lick the paddle!
After about 40 minutes you just scoop out the finished ice cream and store it in your freezer. So far i have made old fashioned vanilla(a cooked base with an egg in the mix) the a quick and easy vanilla and the coffee. DELICIOUS! What are YOUR new favorite things???

Project progress.....

I have so many little (and bigger) projects started, waiting to be finished! I love having more than one project going at the same time. Some take more time and attention than others, so i work on what i have time and attention for when i finally sit down to work at night... This is my first attempt at a poncho. It is a super easy pattern i got online, meant to be worn by Lola...Now, i knew the pattern was going to be a bit large for her...She is only in size 24 months and this was meant for a size 2-4 years...However, this finished product is more like a size 5!!! So it is hanging on the rack at The Paper Sparrow. Hopefully some little girl will love wearing it....(the wooden bird hanging under the poncho from the knob is an ornament Seth made for me)

In the meantime, i am back to the drawing board, making another crocheted poncho that should be more like Lola's size. Part of the poncho is on the table above, in violet and yellow cotton yarn... I also started a little cotton hat in size 6 months for the shop. We've gotta keep those little baby heads covered from the hot sun!
Here's a closeup of the colors. I love this yarn as it can be worn by a boy or a girl.

I have a passel of teddy bears started too. Some are waiting for arms, and the others are waiting for faces and to be sewn and stuffed....

And here is an unusual project for me. I saw this scarf on TV and loved it, so when i found the pattern online, i had to try it. It's called a "corrugated" ruffle scarf. It has a crocheted cord running thru the middle that you pull thru and tie to get this "Elizabethan" style look...

but you can also leave it untied and folded in half for a traditional style scarf....
OR open it up and wear it as a shawl/stole. You can see the crocheted cord running thru the piece here....I find it very interesting! What do you think?
(Thank you Carly, for modeling this for me!)

Easter, Part 2

The Easter Egg Day!
(I swear this is the last of the Easter pics!)
Lola was a bit hesitant to start coloring her eggs at first, but watched her cousins color a few eggs
Ryan had no problems dippin the eggs!

And Lukie, serious as ever, got right to work! Who needs a spoon??!
But once she got goin...there was no stopping her!

Cuteness....
and more cuteness....
What a mess!

GG (Great Gram/my Mom) and Aunt Peachy (Mom's sister) watch the festivities from a safe distance

Lola counts her eggs......

Time for refreshments! Cupcakes decorated especially for Easter. Check out Lukie's fingers. I hope that food coloring fades fast!

One tired little Easter bunny...Time for a nap...

Spring Day

I actually took these photos on Easter Sunday. It was nice enough for the kids to put on their jackets and go out to play for a while. Lola picked one of GG's pansies (GG is my Mom, and short for Great Grandmother)
A quiet moment sitting on the steps....

Here comes cousin Ryan!
These two are really good friends....
Lo getting ready to play ball, and Ryan rolling down the hill....

Sitting down for a bit of a rest....
Ok Gumma, enough pictures!

Spring in the Trees...

There are signs of Spring everywhere! There is Spring in the trees!
Inside and out..... This little tree on my windowsill (center) is a tropical pre bonsai (not trained to a bonsai pot yet...) and it is blooming. It's called a Vietnamese Water Jasmine tree, and the flowers are very tiny, but very fragrant. These little star like flowers hang from their stems in a pendulous way and every tiny movement of air, causes them to sway a bit. It was very hard to get this picture, as any little movement by me or the plant due to a breeze, caused the picture to blur. I'll try to set up my tripod to see if i can take a better shot later....

And here is an old friend of mine, just starting to bloom. This plant is older than my oldest daughter. I remember going to Boston on a bus trip to see the huge annual flower show with my grandmother Mary, when i was 18 years old. That is when we first laid eyes on her favorite, the Martha Washington geranium, and this little gem, an Easter cactus. Up until then we had only seen and heard of the Christmas cactus. This plant is almost 37 years old! It is the original cactus, but there are many many cuttings all over the place, as all you do is take a branch of it and pop it into the soil in another pot and let it take root.

It's flower is flatter than the Christmas cactus bloom, and actually looks like a St. Michaelmas daisy to me....
This little plant is just one of the things that keeps my memories of my Grandmother alive and with me every day. I remember us coming back on the bus with our plants, happy as clams! I hope to share so many experiences with Lola and Seth so they will remember their grandmother too....

Knitty Gritty

Just because Spring is here, doesn't mean the yarn and needles go away. I plan to keep knitting and crocheting all Summer long, making little light weight cotton things and some dolls and bears, and making warm woolen things for the cold months to come
(and we all know they will be back all too soon!) We've been putting the Winter hats away and i've been busy knitting up some all cotton, light weight hats for the little ones out there. Gotta keep those little heads covered from the sun!
I took a "finishing" class with my knitting teacher Linda last week, and since she sat me down and taught me the invisible seam technique, i am feeling much better about my seams!

These little booties are so simple and are going on the shelf at The Paper Sparrow.

And these scarflettes are being packed away for next Fall and Winter.

Here's an update on the lace shawl i started...It's coming along, slowly but surely! I've REALLY got to pay attention to this pattern or i will make a big mistake so i only work on this when i can without being distracted or disturbed. I really do like working with lace tho...

Here's a close up of that pattern ...

And i started this lace scarf, done in a very fine metallic rayon yarn. The pattern is less complicated than the cotton shawl, and good practice for me.

It reminds me of honey comb when you see it up close... I hope someday soon to have a few pieces i can be proud of, all done in lace ...

Easter Morning Baking

I got up early this morning to do some baking for our annual Easter Brunch. Our family gathers at my Parent's house and we all bring goodies to share at the table. This year i volunteered to bake the bread. The loaves above are a new recipe from my favorite bread book. The bread is called "Limpa" and it is a Scandinavian sweet bread. It is so aromatic, with ingredients like honey, cardamom and anise....mmmmmm

I also baked a loaf of my favorite poppy seed bread, and a loaf of rye too. We'll bring along a few containers of fresh homemade applesauce, made from the local Farmer's Market apples. Happy Easter everyone! (Nance, Ned, and Rob, we miss you!)
